Although he may not have to shoulder all the cost of the wedding, the father and mother of the bride are traditionally the hosts. It is from them that invitations are sent and they should duly greet all the guests and mix with at the reception. The father of the bride traditionally rides with her in the car to the ceremony, walks her down the aisle and then 'gives her away' in marriage to the new 'most important man in her life'. The Father of the Bride is also expected to make the first speech after the meal.
