Tidy up your finance

Changing your finances overnight is never going to happen, however each time you do make a decision its a step in the right direction, make goals and stick to them.

Controlling and sorting out your finances takes time, which you'll have to accept, its a long road but the freedom you'll achieve at the end is well worth it.

Understand you salary and learn what you can spend a month?

If you earn £25k a year, think of it as £20k and then budget down accordingly, that way you can allow additional budget for things you hadn't planned for, eg holidays, unexpected repairs to your house, all your friends decide to get married!! It is a well known fact that the more you earn the more you spend, this is a fatal trapping as earlier on in our careers we managed to survive on considerably less money!

Try not to stumble into the pitfall of keeping up with friends and neighbours, try to forego purchases that you have saved for or that you can't pay in cash (except your property).

Avoid debt on your credit cards

Many people find themselves carrying large debts on their credit cards, when you see such a large amount on your statement it seems like a mountain you'll never climb, however if you can pay off little chunks, ie avoid a nightout, but pay off an additional £20 on the card, walk for a week and avoid the bus you could save £40 a month. Make pack lunches, that can save you £5 a day, or £100 a month. If you managed to do the above you'd save nearly £2000 a year. After paying off your credit card you'll also benefit from be used to surviving without the additional £160 which you could put directly into savings or a tax free isa.

Some quick pointers also include :

  • switch to low rate interest cards.
