Crucifix ground beetle spotted after 50 years
One of Britain’s rarest beetles has been found at a site where it has not been seen for more than 50 years. The crucifix ground beetle was last spotted at Wicken Fen, a National Trust site in Cambridgeshire, in 1951. It is known to be surviving at only three or four other sites in Britain. Stuart Warrington, the conservation adviser who came across the endangered beetle, said that his find was the equivalent of a birdwatcher’s sighting of a bittern. Charles Darwin discovered the species “near Cambridge” while at the university there in the 1820s.
