NZer traveling to Australia - Mobile phone advice?
We've travelled to Aussie several times with our Vodafone cellphone and it worked without any worries at all. You need to talk to Vodafone first to make sure you've got Global Roaming setup (a simple and - I think - free exercise). Its as simple as turning your phone off at the departing airport and turning it back on when you get to Aussie. You'll get a couple of texts welcoming you to Aussie and telling you about Vodafone Australia. What you should do is tell your phone which network you want to connect with (manual connection, not automatic). Select Vodafone Australia and you're good to go. If you leave it as automatic network selection, your phone will find the strongest network signal and connect to that network - maybe without you knowing. The charges are different for different networks .... you may get a nasty surprise on your bill. When you get a phone call from one of your mates, they pay the same as normal but you pay an extra charge because you're overseas - remember that when you're yacking to your mates on the phone.

Which is the best choice? Australia or New Zealand
Got to be Australia - especially since you are a young couple. It has so much to offer. Suggest you visit the Australian Tourist website http://www.Australia.com I lived in Sydney and Port Douglas for 10 years - a magic country. I especially recommend going up to Queensland as you can visit the Great Barrier Reef (fab diving) the ancient rainforest, the outback and so much more..

Brisbane
Hi, I lived in Brisbane too and must say that there are other places in Australia that I prefer. It all depends what you like to do - if you would note down your favourite activities then I and probably lots of people can give you advise. Personally I think that Melbourne is wonderful, the cultural city of Oz, Sydney is the fun and vibrant city (my fav city), Tasmania is really beautiful and if you like nature is the best place, Cairns - well head north to Port Douglas as Cairns does not have a proper beach and is full of backpackers and hostels. Port Douglas (I lived there) is wonderful, really beautiful, great beaches, ancient rainforest (Daintree) and so much more - spend your extra time there rather than Brisbane, Alice Springs is worth a couple of days if you are going to see Kings Canyon otherwise suggest you go to Uluru (Ayers Rock).

Perth...WHy?
I've been all up the East coast and down the West coast to Perth. Maybe I hit it in a bad frame of mind or maybe it was because I was going home after a year of travelling but I really didn't rate Perth that much. does have nice parts of course and the suburbs are probably lovely but the pinnacles are a bunch of sticky uppy rocks in the sand and monkey mia just has dolphins that swim up to the beach which you can find anywhere in Australia (only without 50 - 100 tourists trying to take a look at them). Rottnest island is amazing though.
